My career journey has been an incredible ride full of challenges, growth and learning. In celebration of Women’s History Month, I’d love to share a few key lessons from my experience as a woman in tech and leadership.
I began studying computer science at the age of 14 when I chose a specialized high school, even though I had no idea what a computer could do at the time. It was both fascinating and challenging, filled with algorithms and problem-solving, much like life itself. I enjoyed it enough to continue my studies at the Faculty of Computer Science, where I graduated in 2007.
Since then, I’ve taken on various roles, starting as a web programmer and evolving into leadership positions such as team lead, test manager, product owner, scrum master, senior manager, group lead, and now director of software engineering. My career has taken me across industries, from automotive and banking to the media industry, where I’ve been part of the TiVo journey since 2017, working with brilliant minds on innovative projects.
Navigating tech & leadership as a woman
Being a woman in tech and leadership comes with unique challenges like imposter syndrome, finding your voice in male-dominated rooms and proving your worth. It can feel overwhelming at times, but one thing I’ve learned is that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Mentorship has been one of the most important elements in my growth, and it continues to shape the way I approach my career. But mentorship isn’t about having one person by your side for your entire journey. As you grow, your challenges evolve, and the mentors who guide you early on may not be the same ones who help you at a senior level. The key is to seek out the right mentors for each stage of your career, embracing mentorship as a fluid and evolving experience.
Owning your confidence & communicating your value
One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned is to do whatever it takes to maintain or regain your confidence. You bring tremendous value to the workplace, not just through your technical skills but through your judgment, commitment, productivity and ability to communicate effectively. Recognize and confidently communicate the value you bring. Your career is yours to shape, and your voice matters. Trust in your abilities, surround yourself with the right people and never stop growing.
Take care of yourself and your loved ones
I’ve learned that prioritizing my health and well-being allows me to be more present, both personally and professionally. Spending time with family, pursuing hobbies and connecting with friends enriches not only my personal life but also my career. It helps me understand myself better, maintain happiness, and stay motivated. Don’t hesitate to explore your passions and share them with those you love; it will always bring a sense of fulfillment and joy!
