The class of 2022-2023 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Leadership Foundation’s Technology Apprenticeship Program (TAP) kicked off last week in Washington, D.C. The Foundation works with current and aspiring leaders in broadcasting to build a more diverse, innovative and vibrant future for the industry. Launching live at the new NAB headquarters, the NAB Technical Apprenticeship Program is comprised of 20 students and recent grads from across the United States gathering to learn about broadcast technology today and the latest trends.

Xperi, WHUR, E.W. Scripps, AWS, Microsoft, Sinclair and iHeart Media shared technology updates during the two-day opening session. Small roundtable discussions allowed program fellows to engage program sponsors in in-depth conversations and explore options available within the organizations.

“The NAB Leadership Foundation’s Technology Apprenticeship Program is an educational technical program designed to train, inform and recruit a diverse workforce that meets the emerging technology and engineering needs within the broadcast community,” said Tim Dotson, Senior Director of Development, NAB Leadership Foundation.

This six-month hybrid technical training program provides fellows with hands-on training, marketable skills, certifications, industry exposure and new connections to launch successful careers in broadcast engineering. They will continue their training through April 2023, when they attend the NAB Show in Las Vegas. Upon graduation, they will be interviewed by broadcast and technology sponsors for internship and entry-level career opportunities.

“Through this program, I will learn more about what broadcast technology looks like now and where technology trends are heading,” said Daniel Rodriguez, University of North Texas senior. “In addition to learning about platforms like AWS and Microsoft Azure, I’m looking forward to understanding how to harness the power of the cloud for broadcast and learning about the capabilities and possibilities for the future of broadcasting.”

“I really enjoyed myself at the opening session of the TAP program,” said Imari Hill, Kent State music technology major. “A highlight of the opening session was learning about DTS AutoSense and AutoStage. I am amazed by how radio technologies are growing rapidly and companies such as Xperi are making driving experiences more personalized.”

Xperi is proud to be involved in this year’s program and invest in the people shaping the future of broadcasting. Our team is looking forward to meeting with the students again at the NAB Show this spring and seeing how they will create the future of extraordinary.
